Stallo, Henr}^ Villard and August Wil- lich — these, and scores of like cultured men, would have to live in that Commonwealth seven years before they could ex- ercise the highest privilege of an American citizen. The con- trast between the rights of an ignorant, stupid, and mayhap, vicious negro and those of the literati of Europe's most re- nowned seats of learning presented a spectacle in contrasts that would arouse sensitive Germans to the highest pitch of wrath.
