Mr. Van Rensselaer, on leaving Virginia, came north- ward, and in 1837 was instrumental of establishing a church in Bm-lington, N. J. , and was installed as its Pastor on the 29th of June. He resigned his charge in May, 1840, but always retained for the church a warm affection, and was ready to do his utmost for the promotion of its interests. For two or three of the fol- lowing years, he lived chiefly in Washington City, where he supplied the pulpit of a feeble chm'ch. In 1843, he was invited,... by the Board of Directors of the Theological Seminary at Princeton, to undertake an agency for increasing its funds. He accepted the ap- pointment, and travelled over a large portion of the United States, and collected one hundi'ed thousand dol- lars ; and when he resigned his commission, he refused to accej3t any compensation for his services, and insisted even on paying the expenses of his long and tedious jom-ney. In 1845, Mr. Van Rensselaer received the degree of Doctor of Divinity, from tlie University of New York.
