To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
For a time, the Empire might indeed spread its purple skirt over the Continent, from sea to sea; its proud navy might ride triumphant upon every ocean, and a captive world be har- nessed to its car of conquest. Its marble palaces might for a time glitter in the lacker and tinsel that belong to courts ; and its cities throb with the pulse of commerce, and all the activities of un- bounded material prosperity. But -what then ? All this the -world has seen before, and does not ask for hanging gard...ens and Belshazzar's feasts any more. It has had enough of Egyptian Pyramids and of Roman triumphs. One thing is certain; the sword that carves this Republic into an Empire will be the sword of her execution, and the tyrant who wields it will prove the author of her doom. So complete an apostasy from the faith of our Fathers will be overtaken at last with a destruction as memorable as that of a Carthage, a Babylon, or a Rome. For, if there be truth in History at all, it is that a nation, traversing its funda- mental faiths, dies by an act o^ felo-de-se.
