The method of taking the smoke readings is interesting. Two observers were employed, each placed at a window about 1, 000 feet from the chimney, in positions so chosen that one of the two at all times was a
...ble to have a side view of the stream of gases as they issued from the top of the chimney. Five degrees of smoke were noted, as follows : 1. No smoke.
2. Slight smoke.
3. Medium smoke.
4. Black smoke.
5. Very thick smoke.
These were recorded continuously on a rotating drum, which was driven by clockwork. The paper on the drum was divided by lines parallel to the axis into minute divisions, each SOME STANDARD SMOKE TESTS.
147 of these being one millimetre wide ; and by circumferential lines into five divisions, these corresponding to the five degrees of intensity of the smoke.
