No one can tell who was the -first Bishop of Rome, and there are at least twelve differing opin- ions as to who were the first six bishops, and their order. Truly, as Stillingfleet remarks, " The suc- cession of Rome is as muddy as the Tiber," and its doctrine more muddy than its succession. Our knowledge of the ancient successions is almost wholly derived from Eusebius, while Jerome had access to the same authors as the former writer.
