Vpon the euen of Pentecost, there came vnto vs certaine Alanians, wno arecalled [Marginal note: Or Akas. ] Acias, being Christians after the maner ofthe Grecians, vsing greeke bookes and Grecian priests: howbeit they are notschismatiques as the Grecians are, but without acception of persons, theyhonour al Christians. And they brought vnto vs sodden flesh, requesting vsto eat of their meat, and to pray fo...r one of their company being dead. ThenI sayd, because it was the euen of so great and so solemne a feast day, that we would not eate any flesh for that time. And I expounded vnto themthe solemnitie of the sayd feast, whereat they greatly reioyced: for theywere ignorant of all things appertayning to Christian religion, except onlythe name of Christ. They and many other Christians, both Russians, andHungarians demanded of vs, whether they might be saued or no, because theywere constrained to drinke Cosmos, and to eate the dead carkases of suchthings, as were slaine by the Saracens, and other infidels?
