The stop S, however, stops a large proportion of these rays, and the smaller it is, and the nearer to the tube, the greater will its effect be. In practice the improvement pro- duced is very striking, small foreign bodies, for example, such as needles, which may be quite invisible when the aperture is large, showing up ...plainly when the diaphragm is nearly closed. The diaphragms supplied are often of the " iris diaphragm " type. This type, however, is not satisfactory, for two reasons. In the first place the aperture is always practically a circle, and it frequently happens that a circle is not the figure which fits most closely the part we wish to radiograph.
