She came less to my room. Soon after Mary’s return their engagement was announced. They seemed happy together.
I felt like something dirty and devilish, a temptation overcome.
Something else too, another disappointment. I’d made an application for officer training. I’d talked to Mary and Harold about my plans. ‘Are you sure, Trixie?’ Mary asked. ‘Of course I am, why?’ I was surprised she was not more encouraging.
