I could hear Daisy through an open window, crying and fussing, but I didn’t see Jesse. I kept going up the road until I came to the scene of the crime, the pasture, and there in a lump was the horse in the same spot she had fallen. I felt just like the horse.My father was on the front step when I returned, sitting in a lawn chair and smoking his pipe in the twilight.
