According to the same lawgiver a Brahmin may without hesitation take the property of a Shudra. The lower castes are compelled by the caste regulations to humiliating restrictions in their mode of lif...e. The Chandala and Shoapaka must live outside towns, be denied the use of unbroken vessels, and have as their sole wealth dogs and asses. Their clothes must be those of the dead, their dishes broken pots, their ornaments rusty iron. Other classes must have no intercourse with them. The Brahmins and other castes are by no means to be equal in the sight of the law. If a Vaishya slanders a Brahmin be must be tined one hundred and fifty or two hundred panas; if a Brahmin slanders a Vaishya, he is fined twenty-five, ard, if he slanders a Shudra, only twelve panas.
