A quarter of a century before the former, however, in 1844-45, a great American Bishop — great for his learning, for his character, for his influence — I mean Dr. John Henry Hopkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont, addressed to the Church four letters, entitled 11 The Novelties which Disturb our Peace, " in which he sounded the trumpet of alarm against the introduction of the novel and strange principles introduced by the Oxford THE CHANGE OF NAME 121 Tract writers — principles and practices sim- ilar to those against which the English Bishops quoted above uttered their warning ; similar also to those which are put forward at the present time in our own Church.
