When we separate a group into a num- ber of smaller groups, in division, we obtain groups which are of equal size. In the same way, when we multiply, we take the same group a number of times 202 PSYCHOLOGY OF COMMON BRANCHES until we arrive at the larger group which results from this multiplication. This fact of the equality of the groups in multiplication and division would seem to make ...these processes simpler than those of addition and subtraction. Addition and subtraction are probably simpler to the child. On the other hand, addition and subtrac- tion may be carried on one step at a time, as when we have four and add one to it, or when we add two to four.
