The experiment at once became more unusual and more inter- esting. The subject stood with his back toward Mesmer, who presented his finger at a distance of eight feet. As long as the finger remained fixed and motionless, pointing in the direction and held at the height of the subject's shoulders, he did not feel any effect; and the questions which Mesmer reiterated for the space of about two minutes only strengthened the subject more and more in his incredulity.
