These instincts do not appear as a rule until adolescence ; yet we may, perhaps, in- clude with them the instinct of children to care for pets, dolls and children younger than themselves. It should be noted, too, that the parental care-taking instinct in adults is not restricted to those who are themselves parents. The successful teacher has a good share of it. (3) The social instincts are those concerned with relations to other persons. (4) The adaptive instincts are those which bring the child into closer contact with his environment, and enable him to adapt himself to his surroundings. In this class are three great instincts which are, per- haps, the most important of all in relation to the work of the teacher. They are imitation, play and curiosity. (5) The regulative instincts are those concerned with the formation of ideals and the regulation of life in light of them.
