Some said it was a wild, impossible dream, others that it was possible, while a few far-seers said it was not at all improbable. The colonel's faith finally caused him to draw up a charter, and as a mem- ber of the Territorial Senate of 1859 he secured its pas- sage. The first name of the company was the Atchison and Topeka Railroad Company, but when the charter gave it auth...ority to build to the State line **in the direction of Santa F6" the name was changed, in 1863, to its present form. On the 15th of the following September the men interested in the new road met and THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTA Ft. 77 organized, with the following Board of Directors: S. C.
Pomeroy, L. C. Challis, B. F. Stringfellow, D. L.
Lakin, C. K. HoUiday, F. L. Crane, Jacob SaflEord, H. W. Farnesworth, S. N. Wood, Joseph Frost, W. K.
