Lowrie Bell. On February 4, 1907, on account of failing health. Captain White retired from the service. He had held the position of general superintendent for sixteen years, a period longer than that of all the six general superintendents between the retire- ment of Mr. Bangs and his own accession, combined. When Captain White retired, the Postmaster- General, the Hon. G. B. Cortelyou, wrote a letter highly commendatory of his long and faithful service, which was read with great interest and sa...tisfaction throughout the country. ' While Captain White was general superintendent, the postal railway service was increased enormously. When he became general superintendent, October 4, 1890, the number of postal railway clerks was 5,836. When he retired, February 4, 1907, the number was about 14,000, an increase of about 8,164. The number of miles of railway upon which mail was carried when Captain White became general superintendent was about 154,779. When \ The Railway Mail Service he resigned, the mail was carried upon 203,000 miles of railway, an increase of 49,000 miles.
