He was keenly alive to the necessity of keeping a strong force well in hand in that region at all times; otherwise invasion would be invited, and its disastrous consequences 29 Colonel Morey, notwithstanding his open and persistent support of the independent movement, continued in command of the Twelfth regiment until hostilities reached the verge of armed collision between New Hampshire and Vermont over the jurisdictional issue.
