To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
" rifles — many without bayonets. Equip- ment was largely imaginary, and just as the 259 organisation for 600 men was complete the powers discovered that there weren't tents enough to go round, and ordered a reduction of tire personnel in camp to 300 men and 11 officers. The remainder were to be sent back to London ! The request of the CO. To be allowed to buy tents — in good preservation, which were being offered cheaply by London dealers — was turned down, and things looked pretty gloomy unti...l the energy and determination of Major-General Sir Francis Lloyd, who came down specially to see how things were, got the matter straightened out. After some weeks of unsettlement, tents came back from somewhere and training proceeded, but as all musketry practice beyond 100 yards had to be gone through at Purfleet much time was lost. Another complication came in the shape of invalids from the ist Battalion which had been badly cut up in France. The Military Authorities seemed unable to make up their minds as to how these men were to be treated.
