Josef Konrad Korzeniowski was born a Pole, and he was twenty I years of age be...fore he knew a word of English. His first book, "Almayer*s Folly," was published in 1894, and its success caused the seaman to turn novelist. "Almayer*s Folly" is a sequel to "An Outcast of the Islands," which was published later. With "The Nigger of the 'Narcissus*," an epic of the sea, Conrad became known as "the novelist of the sea." Two autobiographical works of Conrad's are said to be the key to all his novels: "The Mirror of the Sea" and "A Personal Record." These contain the "memories and impressions" of his early life.
