A friendly professor made some inquiries among Loring's classmates as to the cause of the disfavor ill which he was held, but could get little satisfac- tion. It was not one of his very best pieces, being more in the style of William Morris than in his own, and more remarkable in its graceful versification than for elevation of thought or depth of sentiment ; but its effect at Harvard was like a thunderbolt in a clear sky.
