At first these discomforts can be laughed at, but it is a hardy European who docs not come to loath the sight of a posada off the beaten track by the end of a month or two. Light, coming up from behind the workl, tinges the more lofty peaks witli pale rose and saffron, but the valleys are filled with heavy violet shadows. In the courtyard all is confusion. The breath of man and beast forms a thick mist in the freezing air ; and steaming, kicking animals are being loaded with packages which make it a cause for wonder that their backs do not break under the strain.
