But here, at the very moment when the loftiest interests of our being are at stake, at the turning where the fate of the soul must be decided, when we are conscious that the issues of life and death hang in the balance of our action, — at this moment the com- pulsion is withdrawn, the way is open, the will is left at liberty to choose the right or to reject it.
