The wall of the lachrymal sac is adherent to the limbs of the medial (internal) palpebral ligament Those parts of the sac left bare by the ligament are covered by fibres of the orbicularis palpebrarum and by skin. The lachrymal sac measures 12 mm vertically and 2 to 3 mm trans- versely. Its superior rounded extremity, which coincides with the upper border Digitized by Google 48 of the palpebral ligament or bat slightly overtops it, is termed the fornix.
Inferiorly the tear-sac narrows as it mer
...ges into the nasal duct. The orifice of the lachrymal canal (canalicalas) is encountered in the lateral aspect of the lachrymal sac, rather towards its posterior surface and in the region where the medial (internal) palpebral ligament crosses the sac, — 2 mm from the fornix. The tear-sac is continuous with the nasal duct (ductus naso- lacrimal! s), the site of transition, known as the isthmus of the nasal duct, being narrow, — 3 mm in diameter. Further down the duct becomes wider.
According to Hyrtl, in older subjects the nasal duct may be dilated to double its usual size.
