This is no proof of the inefficiency of the gospel. Bnt it is a proof that God will not have his gospel insulted in this way ; that he will not bless the preaching of it to the cure of any national sin, unless we prove our sin- cerity by striving with all our might to put away all occasions of it We must work out our own salva- tion with fear and trembling, if ever we would have God "work in us to will and to do."
