Having obtained WOMEN SMUGGLERS. 153 an interview with the mistress, she was asked if she had brought any dutiable goods ashore. She emphatically denied having done so, but when she was notified that the officers must then search the house, the sealskin cape and mantle were produced, but the lady said they were old garments. Unfortunately for her, however, the Cus- toms officers gain considerable knowledge of what relates to these articles, and are able to tell a new garment from one that has b...een worn. A glance at the furs showed the garments were new. Christie then formally seized the articles, and after some further pressure the lady called her husband, who admitted that he had brought out the furs with him. He added, however, that he had no other dutiable goods with him. An unfortu- nate falsehood, for the officers knew better, and he only increased his punishment. The detectives insisted on searching his trunks, and found in them a varied assort- ment of dutiable articles. So far so good.
