H...is voice, though powerful, was not strident or loud — ^at least, it did not appear so — though when he spoke every sentence could be distinctly heard ; there was, indeed, an ease and complete absence of strain about his speaking which rendered it most agreeable to the hearer. An orator of the calibre of Bright or Gladstone he certainly was not, but his speeches, devoid of flowery phrases or spirited declamation, had, nevertheless, a certain convincing power of their own which, I think, more than made up for their lack of studied effect.
