Street lighting was established in San Jos6 in 1840. It consisted then of lanterns provided with tallow candles, whose feeble light lasted but a few hours. This poor method was re- placed by that of oil in 1856, and according as the city progressed, good lamps were arranged to the number of 225 in the central part. These, again, were superseded by electric light, adopted by special contract, whose service is universal throughout the city, and whose light is a hundred times superior. It is hoped... that ere long incandescent lighting may be adopted for the houses. The police, with a view to better discipline, is organized militarily. It is composed of a first Digitized by VjOO^I^ THE CITY OF SAN JOS^J. 193 commandante, a second commandante, six ser- geants, and eighty gens d^armes^ provided with all that good service demands, including a proper uniform. This department, which was formerly almost useless through neglect and poor organization, is to-day regulated in accord- ance with the legislation of model countries, and affords important services.
