Maria alone was happy in the world of her fancies. She began to pay less and less attention to the hateful actuality of her surroundings. She went deeper and deeper into the kingdom of her visions. Every story of hers gavehim a pretext for being ready with some lines of poetry — he would complete and develop the insane fancies of his daughter, and as she listened sleepily to no REPUBLIC OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS their strange conversations Florentia would sometimes spit and pronounce a curse, sometimes cross herself and whisper a prayer to the Holy Virgin.
