Payn, who had been elected to succeed Pendleton in the Senate, was spoken of favorably in the East, but his connection with the Standard Oil Com- pany and his lack of political experience made him unavail- able. 1 Hoadly was one of the Republicans who had joined the Liberal movement of 1872 and then gone back to the Democrats.
