THE SNOW MAIDEN.
DARK was the winter night, And the storm blew gustily, When, amid its restless watches, A maiden came to me.
Her shoulders bare, gleamed white, And were bright, but cold to see ; The curve of her shape was wavy As snow-wreaths curling free.
Icicles were her eyes, And her body glittered fair; What, but wreaths on the frost...ed pane, Could gleam as gleamed her hair?
THE SNOW MAIDEN.
. Morning came, and yellow The light of the young sun shone; As fell the flakes from the hedges, My maiden white was gone.
O, my poor snow maiden, Swift gone in the warm sunshine ! So may each cold thought go with thee, That chilleth me or mine.
THE NECKLACE, BRISING.
ON the bosom fair, what resteth there, On the bosom softly rising'? Upon Freyja's breast, what there doth rest, But the golden necklace, Brising?
From the hearth-stone has her Odur gone, And for him she is ever pining; And every tear turned a golden sphere, Is amid her necklace shining.
