To this is to be attributed all the enormities of its inception, prosecution, and present results. Moreover, the Compact view of the Con- stitution did not originate with Mr. Calhoun, or Democrats of his faith, respecting State Hights. It originated with the framers of the Constitution itself, and was not denied by any man of note for ...forty years of our history. It was because he thought this construction, which has in later times been put upon it through the subtleties of a " muddled " theory, would be put upon it, that Patrick Henry opposed its ratification. But it was denied by the friends and advocates of the Constitu- tion, in every State Convention where the question was raised, that this construction could possibly be put u])on it, in the face of the notorious facts attending its formation.
