It would never ...occur to the boy to think that the mis. Chievous doctrine had been decreed and made orthodox by an oecumenical council, unless that notion was put into his head by an outsider. The mere phrase "in process of time " makes it perfectly clear that it was an abuse which had gradually grown up in the Church. It was certainly competent for the author to explain how long the process of time was, during which this corrupting representation of indulgences had been spreading in the Church ; but whether the process was long or short affects no point involved in the controversy.
