From these two sources he pieced together his wonderful composition.
In June, 1865, Wagner produced at the Opera House in Munich Tristan and loslde, the rehearsals of which were personally superintended by the com- poser. Writing to his friends at Mariafeldt he says : " For the first time in my life had my artistic inclina- tions free play: their pillow was smoothed by love.
