Soon after- wards, however, Bessarabia fell under the power of the Turks, — 87 and for many centuries was subjected to their yoke. After a struggle that lasted for two centuries between Russia and Turkey, Bessarabia at last passed in 1812 into the possession of Russia, together with its fortresses : Khotin, Bender, Aker- niann and Ismail.
