r Yet, with all these irregularities, a strict obedience to the word of a spiritual superior was both inculcated and enforced. By the rule of St. Benedict, no difficulty, or even impossibility, enjoined on any member of the frater- nity by the superior, was to be declined. He might humbly and patiently represent the state of the case to the su- perior, without offering resistance or contradiction. But if the prior still persisted in his order, the disciple was to feel convinced that it must be ...so, and with trust in the Divine assistance, must obey.
