His later investigations would make it seem probable that the poem did not become gen- erally known until about the middle of the 1 3th century. 2 The statement of Haeser that most of the manuscripts begin with the words 1 R. Pepin speaks of the Middle Ages as "une 6poque ou la produc- tion originate n'existait, pour ainsi dire, pas, les e'crivains se copiant mutuellement.
