He was the parish clergyman, the personal friend of the bridegroom. He would be familiar with every detail of the story ; would take part in the wedding 258 OF LAMMERMOOR "LUCY ASHTON" ceremony, and in the welcome-home rejoicings. It is incredible that Symson would put his verses to- gether in such a fashion, if the circumstances were as the traditions allege. The " Elegy " is one of a group of thirteen which appeared at the end of Tri- pa...triarchicon (The lives of the Patriarchs), a series of religious poems, printed at Edinburgh in 1705 by Symson himself, who turned printer after his minis- tering days were over at the Revolution. The title of the poem is as follows : " On the unexpected Death of the Vertuous Lady, Mrs. Janet Dalrymple, Lady Baldone, Younger.
Nupta, Aug. 12 ; Domum ducta, Aug. 24 ; Obiit, Sept. 12 ; SepuU. Sept. 30, 1669." * The composition is in the form of a dialogue between a stranger and a domestic servant at Baldoon.
