His surprise was great when he reached Lord Brecon's house to see lights streaming from every window. The sound of music proceeding from the drawing-room told him that a reception was being held. He had, however, heard of Lord Brecon's appointment at the Foreign Office and concluded that, in spite of his sister's ill-health, he was obliged to entertain.
