Everything must be focussed on the central incident, and to this end every member of the company must think first and all the time of the play, and not indulge in those hateful individual touches of " pantomime. " What I mean is best seen in what happens quite f...requently in ordinary plays. Nearly every minor actor and actress seems to take, or is allowed to take, licence to put in a little bit of " business " on his or her own account, and so draw kudos to himself or herself by being supposed to be " funny. " It is really only " supposed. " Generally it is not funny at all, and it mars the effect of the play by making the entire atmosphere restless and perplexed. Eyes are strained here, there and everywhere, and the poor audience in trying to catch this, that and the other point, is probably missing what is the chief point of the play.
