I M, de Lally was the son of Thomas Arthur, Comte de Lally-ToUendal.
The latter, a brave general of Irish descent, who distinguished himself in the service of France, had been sent to India as governor-general of the French possessions. At that time the war with England was carried ...on actively both on the continent and in the colonies. In spite of hià heroic efforts, he found himself unable to resist the superior forces of the English, and was taken prisoner. . On his return to France he was arrested and imprisoned. The people, enraged at the loss of India, demanded a victim on whom they could gratify their vengeance, and Lally, after being refused the right of defending himself, was brutally beheaded, 1761. The unfor- tunate general left a son, Gérard de Lally-ToUendal, who began to work with filial devotedness for the rehabilitation of his father's memory.
