As the sun rose, a shadow fell over the terrace, and I got up, shivering. I walked around the house, toward the front, and as I neared the driveway, I saw Rachel and Mrs. DuPrae standing by a car, talking. The driver’s door was open, and Rachel’s arm was perched on top of the car as she faced her mother.
