And letters patent shall be issued by the United States as soon as practicable for the land hereby guaranteed. " (ibid. , p. 387). In the Treaty of New Echota, 1835, the guarantee was again renewed and was extended to cover the new grant of the so-called Cherokee Neutral Lands (ibid. , p. 441). In the fourteenth article of the Creek treaty of 1832, the principle of territorial integrity was laid down by implication and protection and a patent were promised, "The Creek country west of the Mississippi shall be solemnly guar- The Harlan Bill 247 anarchy, and confusion.
