Compare with this what the first Book of Kings tells us as to the houses built by Solomon. Cfa. V. And vii. f Sharon designates a flowery district, which extends from the foot of Carmel, and slopes gently towards the Medit...erranean. Compare Isaiah, ch. Xxxiii. 9, and xxxv. 2. It is impossible for us to translate the proper name of the flower to which the Shulamite compares herself. There is no means of giving its scientific name, colchicum, and still less its popular name, tue-chien, or safran-latard. It is an autumnal plant with violet flowers, and abounds among the grass of the plains. The Germans call it the Zeitlose. In the Dutch M. Hoekstra is puzzled by the same difficulty, and prefers to cut the knot, as we do, rather than apply, as figurative of the Shulamite, the horrible word Herfsttydeloose.
