When the poor are incapable of contributing any longer to their own support, they are re- moved to the workhouse. I cannot express the feelings of hope- lessness and dread with which all decent people look on to this wretched termination of a life of labour. ... To this society of wretchedness the labouring poor of England look as their last resting-place on this side of the grave ; and rather than ...enter abodes so miserable, they endure the severest privations as long as it is possible to exist.
These are the words of an Englisliman, who understood the subject about which he wrote. But still it would be an error to suppose that there is no liberty, even for the poor in England. On the contrary, m many of the essential elements of free- dom, our own Constitution and laws are founded upon the Constitution and laws of Great Britain.
