What reading level is The Speakers of the House book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The Democratic minority, fearing the brand of disloyalty, deemed it inexpedient to hold a caucus and therefore de- clined to present a party candidate. On the call of the roll Mr. Grow received 71 votes, Mr. Blair 40, with 48, principally Democratic, scattering. Before the announce- ment of the ballot many of Blair's supporters changed their votes and the official result gave Grow 99 votes — a majority of all the members. Grow had entered the House of Representatives in 1851, and was then the y...oungest member of that body. From the Wilmot district in the northern portion of Pennsyl- vania he seemed the incarnation of abolitionism. Born in Windham County, Connecticut, a community which had given deep of its blood and treasure to our Revolution, he was rich in the heritage of patriotism and sturdy, freedom- loving ancestry. In 1857 he had been the Republican 150 The Speakers of the House candidate for the Speakership, and in 1859, on the first ballot he divided the votes of his party with the less mag- netic Sherman.
