To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

There was another person, however, who had recently made some atrocious attacks upon them. Michelet was not an author to be quoted as an autho- rity either here or elsewhere. He was a writer of romances of the most atrocious nature against the Jesuits. How he succeeded in France was by drawing on his imagination instead of upon authorities. There was not one assertion of crime which he had alleged on the part of the Jesuits, which was not without foundation. The Jesuits were subject to the civi...l law, like other men ; and if they were guilty of crimes, they could be punished. The truth was, that they had drawn persecution upon themselves in consequence of the purity of their lives.
From which countries had they first been expelled and had suffered persecution? They had first been expelled from Portugal. He was sure that no one would say that that was a most pure and enlightened country. They had then been ex- pelled firom Spain. He was sure no one would rise and say that that was a pure and enlightened country.
