To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
From the Sd of December up to the S6th of that month — though I remained constantly in town up to the 28d — the subject never was revived with me, or in my presence: If anything passed between other members of the cabinet upon this matter, to me it was wholly unknown'. I con- sidered it completely at rest. It is true, however, that before the 26th, several events which tended materially to impair the strength and to shake the stability of the Govern- ment had occurred. Some of them are notoriou...s to all the world, and it is no part of my explanation here to describe them: others were communicated to me and my noUe friend Lord Goderich, in a manner which precludes me from adverting to them, without betraying confidences, which I am not at liberty to disclose. . These signs of the times were ominous ; but still, when I left town for a few days on the 23d of December, I can state with perfect sincerity, that it was my fixed and firm determination to use my best efibrts to keep the Government together, and to prepare myself to meet the difiiculties, whatever they might be, of our situation in Parliament.
