C. Foxley and a Japanese catechist to shepherd the few Christians of this town and neighbourhood, and to build up a church. Fifty miles further to the west lies the important garrison town of Okayama (pop. 93, 000) where the Society has worked since 1897. Various supersti- tious forms of belief like Tenrikyo and Kurozumi claim large numbers of adherents and progress is slow. For some years the Rev. H. T. Steele has worked here and in the surrounding country ; he has also under his charge a cong...regation in the north of the Island of Shikoku. Here great promise is shown, advance has been rapid, and it is hoped that ere long a church will be built. In the south end of the Island of Shikoku in the town of Kochi (pop. 38, 000) a church is being slowly built up under the care of the Rev. J. Y. Makino, who has worked doggedly for seven or eight years, often alone. This place is the most isolated post in the Kobe district, for it is thirteen or fourteen hours by steamer from Kobe, and except for a visit once a year from the Bishop and twice a year from a foreign worker it is cut off from any help.
