Each arm, after having been accessory, must in its turn become a principal element, because there are circum- stances in which a particular eflfect is to be produced. Thus cavalry reserves are indispensable, whether for en- gaging masses of cavalry, or to precipitate themselves upon ill- supported infantry corps, or to cover infantry when in disorder, or to carry batteries, etc. This cavalry should be supported and sustained by an artillery force belonging to and associated with it, accord- ing... to circumstances, in order to obtain the desired result. The cavalry is here the principal arm, and the artillery accessory. Then the infantry advance, which completes the disorder, and finally the cavalry, charging npon them, finish their destruction and assures the vic- tory.
