They were settled at different times. Pro- vidence in the spring of 163G. Portsmouth in the spring of 1638. Newport in the following spring, and Warwick in the winter of 1642 — 3. Although the same causes led to these settlements they were independent of each other in every re- spect, managing their affairs in their own town meetings, and conducting for themselves, as best they could, their dis- putes with the Puritan colonies.
